Singapore is an island city-state located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, about 137 kilometers (85 miles) north of equator. Singapore consists of 63 islands, including mainland Singapore. Founded as a British trading colony in 1819, Singapore has experienced vast urbanization and economic growth over the past several decades, and is today not only one of the world's most prosperous countries, but also one of the world's most densely populated countries, with a population of more than 4 million on a very small area.

If you are into Nature and wildlife, among the popular attractions are: Singapore Zoo, acclaimed as one of the world's most spectacular zoos, using natural barriers like streams, rock walls and vegetation to separate animals from visitors, spreading over 28 hectares and home to over 3,600 mammals, birds and reptiles; Botanic Gardens, spread over 52 hectares and with a combination of untouched primary forests and speciality gardens displaying frangipanis, roses, ferns and desert plants to name a few, the orchid enclosure has more than 20,000 orchid plants on display and includes water features and an exotic bromeliad collection from Central and South America; the Jurong Bird Park with a collection of 8,000 birds from 600 species is among the largest in the world; and Night Safari, a part of the Zoo but located on completely separate grounds that are closed during the day, is the world's first wildlife park built to be viewed by night.  

Singapore is well known for its excellent shopping opportunities. The heaviest shopping mall concentration is found in Orchard Road, but also check out Bugis to see where Singaporeans shop. Alternatively visit China Town, Little India or Kampong Glam (Arab street) for alternative shopping and also for very good restaurants with food inspired from their respective home countries, for delicious sea food you should visit the East Coast.

If you want to swim or relax on a beach, head to one of the three beaches on Sentosa or its southern islands. Other beaches can be found on the East Coast. Despite its small size, Singapore has a surprising large number of golf courses, but most of the best ones are run by private clubs and open to members and their guest only. The main exceptions are the Sentosa Golf Club and the Marina Bay Golf Course.

Accommodation in Singapore is expensive by South East Asian standards, particular in the higher price brackets. In general hotel rates fluctuate quite a bit: a large conference can double prices, while on weekends in the off-peak season heavy discounts are often available. The larges hotel clusters can be found by the riverside (goos for sightseeing) and around Orchard Road (good for shopping). Among the most expensive hotels is the famed Raffles Hotel. Even if you do not stay there, it is worth a visit, and to have a Singapore Sling at the bar on the first floor, it has its own atmosphere, and the drink is the best you can get.
